Gelcoating the Ski Locker and Tank area, and installing the deck.

Well after much deliberation, I decided to use gelcoat for the ski locker, and the deck. I did a test sample of enamel with hardener, and gel coat. To be fair, I baked the enamel at a friends paint shop. I liked the way the gel coat looked when dry. Both were very hard, but the enamel chipped, and the gel did not.

Here is what I learned after coating the ski locker and the tank area this evening.

1. Put two coats of the non wax stuff down, and then one coat of waxed. I did one of each.
2. Do not go over it again with your roller, as it takes off what you just put down.

Now it was time go install the deck. I started by marking the lines for the stringers in the top side of the deck panels. Then I used PL glue to attach it to the stringers, followed by Stainless screws coated in 3M 5200.

Sure looks nice with the deck in huh?

My dear old Dad.

You leave a gap between and deck and the hull and fill it with Peanut Butter. You do not want the deck touching the hull.

  1. Hi, I'm mesmerized by this blog. I am embarking on a smaller project but need to do aalot of what you have done. My first question likely of many is when you installed the deck, did you glass the underside or leave it just the wood surface? I know you filled the hull with foam so I don't know if glassing is necessary when you do that. I will be filling the cavity with foam as well ad would rather skip the step of glassing the wood underneath.
