I removed the gimbal ring, which was a night mare. The steering pin gets rusted and requires alot of penetrating oil and a hammer to get it out. I have ordered a Stainless Steel model from JR marine to replace it. I will then give it a coat of paint.

I roughed them up with 3m scotch bright to get them ready for paint
I was lucky and my gimbal ring did not need to be repaired. Most of the time this is rounded off, and needs to be fixed
